The Silent Ones

Some have asked, "Why did we use gliders rather than helicopters in WWII?"

The first flight of the first Army helicopter took place on 13 January 1942. It could carry two persons, and it was impossible to fly on a hot day.

The book covers all the various gliders tested at the USAAF glider test facility;
powered, fuel, tow target, cargo, bomb, assault, human snatch, glider snatch, disabled fighter tow, mid-air retrieval of the B-29 and many other tests for stopping and accelerating gliders. As well, the Hotspur, Horsa, Hamilcar and Gotha 242 were test flown.
